The clip shows how two actors fight in the pitch darkness on the well-lit stage. Crossroads, the name of an inn run by a couple of evil bandits, represents one of jingju’s military plays. One man is acted by a male warrior-role (see Xiqu), who is a general staying in the inn. The other, acted by a martial comic role, is the owner of the inn. He sneaks into the client’s room aiming to kill the general. For comic roles (chou), they always have a white patch, which can be in different shapes, painted on their noses. This can be painted in different shapes depending on the character.
